Strapping Young Lad – The New Black – Century Media Devin Townsend is a legend among legends in the metal community. He has had a string of unconventional releases, all starting with that Vai CD, Sex And Religion, that continue to defy all traditions. Devin is a unique artist with a unique band and that is made well known with their new CD, the tongue in cheek title The New Black. This collection continues Devin’s idea that you should not take yourself to seriously and that he does not. On eclectic tracks like U Suck, Far Beyond Metal, Fucker, and Antiproduct, Devin sticks his finger into the face of society and how a song should be composed. This is an angry, aggressive release except for the surprisingly slow Polyphony, a lilting track that shows a different side of SYL. If you are a fan of SYL, you know this is going to be good, if you are not, why not? Jeffrey Easton |
