RAT SKATES - Born In The Basement - Kundrat

So what do you do when you help jumpstart a complete genre with your groundbreaking band Overkill?  Well, you damn well tell someone about it.  It has been nearly too damn long ago that Rat Skates took his band Overkill to the streets of New York to give birth to the thrash movement on the East Coast and the mayhem that ensued has never rested.  Rat’s tenure in the band only lasted a shade past the mid 80’s but his influence has been felt for decades in the band that he started as they are still touring nad thrash is still as relevant as it ever was.  This video montage takes you to the early beginnings of Overkill when they were known as the Lubricunts  during the punk era on to the formation of Overkill while showing amazing video and stills of the band during the years of progression.  If you were growing up during this period you will feel sentimental for those years of looking in the paper to see when your fav metal band (Overkill of course) and going down to bang it out in the pit for an hour while they shook your senses from the stage.  The slow evolution is closely documented here from the black capes and early corpse paint to the leather and denim approach that we eventually saw on vinyl in the form of albums like Power In Black and Feel The Fire.  Rat sits in front of the camera during the course of this DVD giving his account of the proceedings in excellent detail and giving very personal details when needed.  Rat seems to be an excellent storyteller, kind of like a kid sitting at his dads feet while he tells war stories of coming up from the streets during the thrash metal movement. There are extras as well aside from the main story that include accounts from other former members, rare interviews as well as radio interviews.  The business of music can be harsh sometimes and Rat does not  hold back at all and for that this DVD can not receive a rating lower than five out of five.  This is a well put together  DVD and for any banger that lives the world of thrash needs this starting point.
