AZATHOTH – AZATHOTH – Independent release by Jon "K" Konjoyan Fresh from the CA Death Fest, this central-Cali band manages to pull off the near impossible—appealing to fans of both black and death metal. Often comparing them to DISSECTION, disciples of both genres praise AZATHOTH’s unique ability to blend elements of creepy, dark atmosphere and melody with sledgehammer in-your-face brutality. The band describes their sound as “Chaos, without form or place.” The gorgeous keyboard intro (cleverly titled “Intro”) quickly makes way for the barbaric strains of “In Darkest Dreams,” one of the strongest tracks here. Morbid vocal gurgles playfully intermix with black metal high screeches, while guitars and drums wail away. As the tracks progress, acoustic and symphonic parts (punctuated with interesting touches like a bell or horns), counterbalance with straight-ahead moshing brutality. This is a very tight band, and solid musicianship abounds. Lovecraftian lyrics and a truly artistic album cover complete a very an impressive, two years in the making project. AZATHOTH: 8434 N.
