CRYOGEN – This Nightmare – Independent Release by Jon “K” Konjoyan IN FLAMES and DARK TRANQUILITY come to mind as the forceful, super catchy title track blasts through your speakers. The Gothenburg sound definitely influences this very accomplished and studio-savvy Colorado-based band. At other times, specks of industrial or power metal mix with death metal inspired riffs. Band mastermind and guitarist Ryan Conner has a durable metal voice, coarse without being guttural, belting out worldly lyrics that actually mean something. Lead guitarist Brian Sawyer is the other half of the CRYOGEN dual guitar attack, soaring with some awesome leads. (BLEED THE SKY recently auditioned Sawyer.) No complaints with the musicianship and songwriting here, but things might really get interesting if the guys push themselves into a rowdier, more experimental direction.
