Warrel Dane - Praises To The War Machine - Century Media

Once in awhile you get a CD that makes you say in a review “where do I start?”.  This is one of those Discs.  Warrel has carved quite a long career in the music business dating all the way back to Sanctuary back in the 80’s up through Nevermore nad now the immortal of all things, a solo album.  Most solo albums are an exercise in “how creative I can be”, more of an ego boost but that is not the case here.  Warrel has crafted what I feel is one of the best rock, note I said rock, covering the entire spectrum of hard music, record of the year period.   To beat this record, you will have to spout out something near the incredible mark because this is going to be hard to beat.  Warrel, with the help of Peter Wichers, Matt Wicklund and Dirk Verbeuren, has committed 12 near perfect music performances that are untouchable.  Take the best of what is gothic, metal, neurotic, industrial and pile it onto a silver disc and you have this, Praises To The War Machine.  Warrel covers many topics under this solo umbrella from relations with his brother to under the song “Brother” to politicians and war with “The Day The Rats Went to War”. He has also gone deep with covers that are as diverse as he is with Sisters Of Mercy’s “Lucretia My Reflection”  to Paul Simon’s “Patterns”.   You may wonder about the Paul Simon song but back in the 60’s Paul was a rather dark writer and Warrel has taken it to an even darker place. The album cover artwork is mind numbing, two children greeting the results of the war machine, a nuclear attack.   Nevermore fans will be pleased with this release and pleased that he went in a different direction with this release.  If you only go out and buy one physical CD this year, this should be the one.  It is also available on vinyl as well from CM Distro.
