Hanabie/Left to Suffer/Outline In Color -  Ace Of Spades, Sacramento, Ca 5/24

By Jeffrey Easton

Japan has churned out some of the best bands that have graced the planet, whether it has been metal, hardcore, punk, they really have led the way.  So here we have Hanabie, a hardcore, or shall we say, Harajuku-core, band from Tokyo that is steadily blowing up in their scene.  They have now hit the U.S. for the second time and selling out every where they go.   Their music, their style, their stage presence, drags you into the show and you cant look away till the house lights come up, you have been warned.

Outline In Color took the stage first and considering they have such a long history, The sold out Ace Of Spades was immediately into them.  Having formed in 2009, they have released several records and have toured relentlessly to make a name for themselves.   Still out for their last record, Coast Is Clear,  they dropped Bitter and Ghost Of You into the set to a rabid response.  Like I said, they have a long history of dropping albums and singles so they opened the set with Why You Should Survive and Practice What You Preach from the Imposter Syndrome to a massive response.  I did not matter that they went on first, they had the response and respect from the fans and you need to be one of them.

Taking the stage next was Left To Suffer and to say the place fell apart after the first deafening notes would be an understatement.  Hailing from Atlanta, it must be the heat that fuels this monstrous rage because the fire of this intense deathcore unit could not be contained.  Out on tour to support the recently released Feral, Taylor Barber, the fierce lead singer, marched the band through the album at brutal pace.  Between demanding the floor erupt in a pit, they destroyed Feral with the title track, Primitive Urge, Artificial Anatomy and closing the set with gut punch Disappoint Me.  Left To Suffer have only been around a few years but they are already becoming a force to be reckoned with.

As stated, Hanabie are steadily becoming a dominant band.  Their music is taking over the scene and the personalities are just as loud as the tracks they dispense so easily.  As a testament to this, Ace Of Spades sold out quickly for this show and you could hardly move in the venue.  Once the lights dropped, the band stormed the stage with Yukina, the singer, waving the American flag, because why not.  The solidarity between the American and Japanese music scenes is powerful and these bands have loyal followers here. They Opened the set with Otaku Lovely Densetsu, a cut that absolutely describes the band and their mission.   With that drop, the fans were on, the pit was mad, crowd surfers, Ace Of Spades was electric.  I love bands that bring energy and a stage show but Hanabie are THE stage show as well, each member just oozes personality as they dish their barbaric hardcore.  There have been a few Japanese bands that have stood out, dishing electronics, metal and hardcore, namely Crossfaith, and I feel as though Hanabie have taken that mantle and ran with it.  That being said, they have a new album, Reborn Superstar, that you need to buy, and they pummeled the fans with it. Neet Game, Warning, and Osaki ni Shitsurei Shimasu(Taylor from LTS came out and guested with the band for this).  The new stuff is so brutal, and the band executed it deftly live as Matsuri, Hettsu and Chika are incredible musicians.  Dipping back to Girls Reform Manifest and Cherry Blossoms Are Blooming, they plowed through Ghost Mania, L.C.G.,  as well as encoring with Sunrise Miso Soup and Sentimental Heroine.  This band is already big in Japan and will overtake the rest of the world.  I have been to Tokyo, when fans, music stores get behind a band, its all out warfare for their artist.
